The first online workshop on discussion of news items within the scope of Media Watch on Hate Speech project was held on November 17, 2020, with facilitation of Ebru Özdeş and Şeyma Özkan from the Project. 

Media watch report includes annual results along with quantitative and qualitative analyses of hate speech data for 2019 and the discriminatory discourse reports which focuses on a topics that stood out in 2019 is now available online. 

Based on the Positive Messengers project, which aims to combat online hate speech for migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Europe, experiences about online tools and methods in combating hate speech were shared.

As part of the “Media Watch on Hate Speech” project, we have searched for alternative discourses to hate speeches producing and circulating the discourse of prejudice, discrimination, and violence. Alternative discourse is a rights-based discourse and understanding that combats hate speech.

In the discussion workshop on news items focused on sexual violence, how sexual violence-focused news reproduces discrimination and how a rights-oriented language can be adopted was discussed, with facilitation of Şehlem Kaçar. 

In “Hate Speech in the New Media” panel, hate speech in new media and how to counter it is discussed with contributions of Zeynep Özarslan, Aras Türay and Nilay Erdem, with moderation of Orhan Şener.
