The Fact-Checking in Media workshop within the scope of the project titled “Utilizing Digital Technology by Increasing Cooperation, Exchange and Solidarity for Social Cohesion, Positive Messaging and Peace” with the cooperation of İzlemedeyiz Association – Doğruluk Payı took place on 11th June 2022 with 15 participants at the Hrant Dink Foundation. Participants from different disciplines came together in this workshop, which was facilitated by Koray Kaplıca, the co-founder of Doğruluk Payı, and by Esin Cansu Yılmaz, the reporter and editor of Doğruluk Payı.
In the workshop, participants learned basic concepts about media literacy and the relationship between hate speech and fact-checking. Facilitators explained to the participants what ‘Fact-Check’ is, how to access reliable information sources to find evidence, and what the open source information collection tools are. Participants benefited from the examples presented by Kaplıca and Yılmaz about how misinformation is used as a tool to spread hate and which actors spread misinformation in different ways.
With the group works, visual verification / falsification techniques were practiced, and the participants were informed that recognizing false information and having reasonable suspicion are key to having conscious media literacy. The project aims to organize capacity building workshops and event series with the participation of local and international experts on different topics such as hate speech, disinformation, digital activism, e-literacy, recognizing hate speech, digital feminism, digital harassment, and gender based hate speech.
