Combating Hate Speech and Disinformation Against Social Polarization

The first of the panel series organized under the scope of the project called “Utilizing Digital Technology for Social Cohesion, Positive Messaging and Peace by Boosting Collaboration, Exchange and Solidarity” will be held on October 7 at the Hrant Dink Foundation’s Havak Hall.

The panel will be moderated by Handan Uslu, the founder of Turkey’s first internet monitoring organization Gözlemevi. Alex Mahadevan, the director of MediaWise, Stefanie Ullmann from the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Kareem Darwish from aiXplain Inc are going to adress the issues such as the importance of fact-checking, the consequences of disinformation and fake news, ways to increase users’ knowledge about digital research sources, the definition and detection of hate speech, the relationship between hate speech and social polarization, and social media tools.

 

Speakers:

Alex Mahadevan

Alex Mahadevan is the director of MediaWise at the Poynter Institute. Since 2019, he's taught digital media literacy to thousands of teenagers and older adults, and trained journalists across the world in verification and digital tools for investigations. He also co-leads the Empowering Diverse Digital Citizens Lab with Stanford University researchers. 

Kareem Darwish

Dr. Kareem Darwish is a principal scientist at aiXplain Inc working on efficient human-in-the-loop ML and speech processing. Previously, he was the acting research director of the Arabic Language Technologies group (ALT) at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) where he worked on information retrieval, computational social science, and natural language processing. Kareem Darwish worked as a researcher at the Cairo Microsoft Innovation Lab and the IBM Human Language Technologies group in Cairo. He also taught at the German University in Cairo and Cairo University.

Stefanie Ullmann

Stefanie Ullmann is a postdoctoral research associate on the project Giving Voice to Digital Democracies: The Social Impact of Artificially Intelligent Communications Technology, implemented at the Centre for the Humanities and Social Change, Cambridge University. Stefanie Ullmann’s overall research interests and background are in functional linguistics, critical theory and discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, new media and communication technologies as well as the instrumentalisation of language in states of socio-political conflict and crisis. Her most recent work has focused on quarantining online hate speech, misinformation, gender bias in machine translation, dynamic data statements and exploring counterspeech approaches to fighting hate speech.

Handan Uslu

Handan Uslu is a mechanical engineer, technologist, founder of Turkey’s first internet monitoring organization Gözlemevi, and also the previous responsible strategist for Google’s Trust & Safety operations in Turkey. After graduating from Koç University with a double major in mechanical engineering and economics, she completed Georgetown University’s Communication, Culture and Technology program in Washington DC. She has extensive experience in ethics of artificial intelligence, content moderation, and prevention of hate speech.
