Within December 16-22, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against Westerners, Christians, Croatians, Cypriot Greeks, Syrians and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Yeni Akit, 22 December 2019

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “They allied against Turkey” reports the agreement between Israel, Greece and Southern Cyprus on the pipeline project in the Eastern Mediterranean. This agreement is regarded “anti-Turkey.” With the title “Israel-Cypriot Greeks and Greeks allied against Turkey”, Greek identity is portrayed as an enemy.

2.

Özyurt, 21 December 2019

Ali Yolcu, in his column titled “The first wave is 50,000” writes: “Congratulations Hatay, at least 50,000 more Syrians are coming”, “Unemployment, economic crisis and also Syrian refugees… Hatay is fed up, Hatay is tired, people of Hatay are sick and tired” and “Hatay cannot accommodate more Syrians. Hatay is full. Hatay is in it right up to its nose. The nose is important, because if someone has it up to their nose, then they are not good for anyone, be warned.” With these remarks, he labels Syrians as a “threat” against society; he legitimizes possible violent actions.

3.

Elazığ Günışığı, 18 December 2019

Resul Şahin, in his column titled “Expecting mercy from the cruel”, writes about The Nobel Prize in Literature 2019. He associates Westerners, Christians and Croatians with violence and massacre, fomenting enmity against these identities as we see in the following sentence: “Because Christians were the ones who killed and the Muslims were the ones who were subjected to genocide. This prize revealed their hatred of Muslims. Because most Westerners are anti-Islam and they think little of Muslims. Let’s think, if Serbians would have killed Croatians or another Christian people and this murderer-loving author praised Serbians for it, would the result be the same? No way. On the contrary, this author would have been prosecuted or even jailed. This is how western authorities and people think and behave.”

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
