Within June 3-9, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Armenians and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Sözcü, 4 June 2019

Saygı Öztürk, in his column titled “Dangerous development along the Iranian border”, writes: “It is reported that Armeian intelligence also plays a part in the increase in the number of attacks. Armenians who have designs on Nakhichevan and Iğdır try all kinds of schemes and provocations” and “Shooting of a tanker with Azerbaijani plaque suggests Armenian support to these attacks.” With these remarks, he holds Armenians responsible for these claims. Thus, he reinforces the enmity against Armenians caused by the past events.

Ortadoğu, 8 June 2019

The article published in Ortadoğu with the title “Greek scheme in Middle East” reports drilling works in Eastern Mediterranean. It describes Southern Cyprus’ deal with the firm as “Greek scheme”. Thus, the article presents the identity as a threat and incites enmity against Greeks.

Diriliş Postası, 8 June 2019

The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “The US made a move, Greeks are delighted” reports the crisis between Turkey and the US over S-400 and F-35 delivery. Greek media’s coverage of Turkish pilots who are denied F-35 training after S-400 crisis is reported with the title “Greeks are delighted”. Thus, the article incites negative opinions about and enmity against Greek identity.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
