The workshop on discussion of news items within the scope of Media Watch on Hate Speech project was held on November 15, 2019 with the contributions of Friedrich Naumann Foundation and with the participation of individuals from different segments of the society.

In the workshop, issues such as the basic principles of peace journalism, the necessity of peace journalism and right-based journalism, and the scope of peace journalism were discussed through different examples of news stories and videos. Workshop took place at Hrant Dink Foundation Anarad Hığutyun Building under the moderation journalist Murat Utku. The participants of the workshop were chosen among the applicants of the open call by the Foundation. In addition to the project team and the moderators, workshop was participated by eight people including students from Communication, Cinema and Television, and Literature departments and individuals from different professions such as news editor, teacher and journalist.

In the workshop, the ways by which the framework of a news story produces and reproduces discrimination with its headline, lead sentence, image and content were analyzed and discussed in the light of selected news examples, including videos. Alongside the workshop, the discussion was done through J. Gaultung’s conceptual categorization about “peace/conflict-oriented versus war/violence-oriented”, “truth-oriented versus propaganda-oriented”, “right-based versus elite-oriented”, “solution-oriented versus victory-oriented” journalism. And the main focus of the discussion were the ways the media produce discriminatory language either with the news items or videos, so victimize, marginalize and dehumanize certain groups/individuals when reporting on specific instances. In the final section, of the workshop how it is possible to produce news with an alternative discourse were discussed. These issues were discussed in the workshop through selected examples of news stories and videos.
