In the four-month period covering May-June-July-August 2019, 1313 columns and news articles and 1575 hate speech items targeting national, ethnic and religious groups had been found.

IIn May-August 2019 period, issues like the international arrest warrant issued for foreign executives working with Turkish Petroleum Corporation (June 10), repeated mayoral election in Istanbul (June 24), the anniversary of “Cyprus Peace Operation” (July 19), the anniversary of Srebrenica Massacre (July 11), the anniversary of July 15 coup attempt, actions for damages filed against Turkey over confiscated properties during the Armenian Genocide, August 30 Victory Day and Ministry of Interior’s order for sending Syrians back to the cities in which they are registered contributed to generating of hate speech.

When a distribution per targeted groups is made, it is seen that Syrians have the largest number of hate speech items against them with 264 items. Cypriot Greeks and/or Greeks in Turkey follow them with 262 items and Greeks has the third place with 240 items. Jews with 187 items and Armenians 169 items follow them as the groups that are subjected to hate speech.

In the section where discourse targeting women and LGBTIs are analyzed, you can find qualitative analyses through a limited number of examples, which are selected with the purpose of exposing and questioning the patriarchal and heteronormative discourse which is rooted in journalism and used intentionally or unintentionally.
