In the four-month period covering May-June-July-August 2017, 1910 columns and news articles and 2466 hate speech items targeting national, ethnic and religious groups had been found.

In May-August 2017 period, issues like diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Germany (May 15); diplomatic crises between Gulf states and Qatar (June 15); the Dutch Supreme Court’s ruling concerning Dutch state’s “partial responsibility” in Srebrenica massacre (June 27); Cyprus conference held in Geneva (June 28); Israeli-Palestinian conflict especially escalating on July; “ship crisis” between Turkey and Greece started on July 3; anniversary of Srebrenica massacre (July 11); anniversary of July 15 coup attempt; assaults to Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar on August; and anniversary of August 30 Victory Day contributed to rise of hate speech.

When a distribution per targeted groups is made, it is seen that Jews have the largest number of hate speech items against them with 493 items. Syrians follow them with 472 items and Greeks has the third place with 256 items. Armenians with 247 items and Cypriot Greeks and/or Greeks of Turkey with 212 items follow them as the groups that are subjected to hate speech.

In the section where discourse targeting women and LGBTIs are analyzed, you can find qualitative analyses through a limited number of examples, which are selected with the purpose of exposing and questioning the patriarchal and heteronormative discourse which is rooted in journalism and used intentionally or unintentionally.
