In the four-month period covering January-February-March-April 2018, 2265 columns and news articles and 2370 hate speech items targeting national, ethnic and religious groups had been found.

In January-April 2018 period, issues like “Operation Olive Branch”, the voting in the Dutch parliament to recognize the Armenian Genocide (February 22); the anniversary of the Khojaly Massacre (February 26); the Kardak tension between Turkey and Greece (February); Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24); the dispute between Turkey and South Cyprus about the natural resource exploration works in the Mediterranean; the tensions between Israel and Palestine; parliamentary and presidential elections on 24 June 2018 contributed to rise of hate speech.

When a distribution per targeted groups is made, it is seen that Armenians have the largest number of hate speech items against them with 671 items. Jews follow them with 427 items and Greeks has the third place with 320 items. Syrian with 274 items and Cypriot Greeks and/or Greeks in Turkey with 226 items follow them as the groups that are subjected to hate speech.

In the section where discourse targeting women and LGBTIs are analyzed, you can find qualitative analyses through a limited number of examples, which are selected with the purpose of exposing and questioning the patriarchal and heteronormative discourse which is rooted in journalism and used intentionally or unintentionally.
