Within April 17-23, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech had been selected for the weekly report. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Syrians, Serbians, Jews and Armenians and the analyses below.1

Aydınlık, April 22, 2017

The article, which was published in Aydınlık with the title of “Van massacre is not forgotten” on the first page and and with the title of “Commemoration ceremony on 102th anniversary of Armenian massacre” inside, associates the Armenian identity with violence by using the phrase “Armenian massacre” in the title and in the text repeatedly and incites enmity between peoples.

Bursa Şehir, April 21, 2017

 

Bursa Şehir newspaper's article titled “Jews foully provoke the hunger strike” covers the barbecue party held by a radical group near Ofer Prison in the West Bank against the prisoners on hunger strike. The incident is covered by highlighting the Jewish identity in the title. In this way, a singular incident is identified with the Jewish identity and prejudices against Jews are reinforced.

Yeni Çağ, April 20, 2017

Burhan Ayeri, in his column titled “Never mind the cats, but what about the ballots thrown to the streets?”, writes: “I regard Serbian referee Milorad Mariç as a threat. He must have that traditional hatred of Turks somewhere in his heart.” With this remark, he attributes negativity to Serbian identity through the referee. In this way, the columnist labels Serbians as “enemy of Turks” and incites prejudice and hatred against them.

Yeni Mesaj, April 19, 2017

The article, which was published in Yeni Mesaj with the title of “Syrians made a scene again” on the first page and and with the title of “Syrians and locals of Mersin fought tooth and nail” inside, covers the argument between a group of Syrians and locals in Mersin, causing Syrians to be sent away. In the title, the newspaper blames the Syrians for what happened. Moreover, while District Govenor Aktaş's statements assuring that Syrians will be sent away and locals displeasure of the Syrians are emphasized, Syrians' opinions and testimonies regarding the incident are not covered. In this way, Syrians are not recognized as subjects having rights and they are portrayed as a source of “tension”. The existing prejudices and hatred against Syrians are escalated.


1. Within the scope of the media scanning work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are scanned based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) by the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
