Within January 6-12, 2020, four articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against  Armenians, French, British and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Hasan Kılıç, in his poem published in Hasret Gazetesi with the title “In the light of facts”, sets to insult Armenians, the French and the British on the basis of their languages and religions and also foments enmity between people by accusing them with holding grudge as we see in the following verse: “Armenian, French, British/ Who knows what they speak and believe / They never let go of their grudge / Remember that my fellows in Osmaniye”.

Soke Ekspres Gazetesi, January 6, 2020

Halil Güven, in his column titled “May God protect and glorify Turks”, insults the members of Armenian identity with his opening including the saying “Turks have no friends but Turks” and the description “Armenian looters” at the end; he also reinforces enmity against this identity with the discourse prevalent in the column.

M.Tanzer Ünal, in his column titled “You care about the Syrian lives, but what about the lives of Turks with social security debts?”, holds onto the comparison of “Syrian lives” and “Turkish lives” throughout the column. Under the subheading “Both treatment and medication are free for Syrians”, he writes: “Syrians are examined and treated for free in hospitals, they can have free operations when needed, medication is also free”, “When our citizens with health insurance go to hospital, they are denied because they are indebted”. With these statements, he targets Syrians in Turkey and foments enmity against migrants.

In the article published in Yeni Söz with the title “We may annul the US’ decision to recognize the so-called genocide”, holds all Armenians responsible for actions allegedly carried out by terrorist groups with the subheading “Armenians started a civil war and killed Muslims”. Thus, the existing sentiment of enmity is reinforced.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
