Within April 8-14, 2019, four articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against the French, Hindus, non-Muslims and LGBTIs as well as the analyses written about them below. 1
1.The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “History lesson to the insolent French” reports the argument between Turkish Interior Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and French Deputy Sonia Krimi after France declared April 24 as the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. Referring to the argument in the title with insults to French identity leads to reinforcement of negative opinions about the French. |
2.The article published in Ortadoğu with the title “Hindus attacked the Muslim selling cow meat” reports the attack to a Muslim because he sells cow meat. With this generalization, the article labels Hindus as a threat against Muslims and foments negative opinions about them. |
3.The article published in the Karadeniz with the title “Son of a giaour” reports the damaged beehives after a bear came down to the village. The statement of the beekeeper is used in the title without quotation marks and the word giaour is used which is used as an expression of hatred and insult against non-Muslims in Turkey. Thus, the article foments negative opinions about non-Muslims. |
4.In the article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Homo supporters elected”, candidates who signed “LGBTI-friendly Municipality Protocol” before the election and then elected are targeted. In the article, LGBTIs are repeatedly represented as a pervert and labeled as “threat” against society due to their sexual orientations and gender identities as we see in the following sentences: “Candidates who are elected from the lists of CHP, HDP and TKP are counting the days for making the public resources available to homos” and “It is remarkable that all these people who formalized their support for homosexual perverts by signing the protocol are members of the parties that are against the indivisible unity of Turkey”. Thus, the newspaper labels LGBTIs as an “enemy” and causes normalization and spread of discrimination and violence targeting LGBTIs. |
1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
