Within October 21-27, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Armenians, Greeks, and Jews as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Güneş, 22 October 2019

In the article published in Güneş with the title “Know your place”, Greek identity is used as an insult and Cypriot Greeks are presented as an enemy in the following statement: “Izmir Mayor Tunç Soyer from CHP spoke like a Greek. Ignoring Northern Cyprus’ independence and Turkey’s rights granted by international law, he asked Cyprus to be left to Greeks.”

2.

İttifak, 23 October 2019

The article published in İttifak with the title “77 Turks killed by Armenian terrorist organizations” reports Turkish citizens killed by the organizations ASALA and JCAG. The article associates Armenian identity with terrorism by describing these organizations as “Armenian terrorist organizations”. Thus, the enmity against Armenian identity is reinforced.

3.

Bizim Anadolu Gazetesi, 27 October 2019

Hüseyin Tanrıkulu, in his column titled “Do oppose, but…” discusses the opposition parties’ ways of opposing. He writes: “I regret to say it but the political parties in our country give lots of material to the giaour when they try to oppose and criticize the government and its practices” and “You have the right to oppose. We respect that. But you shouldn’t do it by pushing the buttons of this country and with a political discourse that strengthens the giaour’s hand or by humiliating this great nation which you want to rule before the giaour”. As we see, he uses the word giaour, which is used as an expression of hatred and insult for non-Muslims in Turkey, and reinforces the perception of enmity against non-Muslim identities. He also uses Jewish identity as a reference of treachery and enmity: “I happened to listen to a scumbag called Enes Kanter in an American channel. At first, I didn’t catch his name or I forgot about it, so I thought he is a Jew. But he turned out to be a Turkish traitor.” He also uses Greek identity as a reference of enmity in a similar way: “Even Greek giaours who attempt to occupy [Turkey] haven’t done as much harm as these scumbags who spy and work against this country to gain worldly possessions.” Thus, the columnist foments enmity against non-Muslims, Jews, and Greeks.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
