Within October 8-14, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Syrians, Jews, Christians and LGBTIs as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Yeni Mesaj, 12 October 2018

In the article published in Yeni Mesaj with the title “Syrians now create trouble in Denizli” on the front page and with the title “First Şanlıurfa, then Denizli” inside, a singular incident is reported with an emphasis on national identity of suspects, though it is not directly related to the incident. Thus, Syrians are labelled as a potential threat on the basis of a singular event and targeted by being associated with crime.

2.

Yeni Söz, 11 October 2018

The article published in Yeni Söz with the title “Endless Jewish torment on Palestinians” reports the detention of 14 Palestinians by Israeli army by accusing Jewish identity as a whole. Associating Jewish identity with “torment”, the article reinforces negative opinions about Jews and cements the perception of enmity.

3.

Takvim, 10 October 2018

The article published in Takvim with the title “Instant reaction to Armenian slander” reports Parliamentary Speaker Binali Yıldırım’s criticism against Armenian Deputy Parliamentary Speaker. With the description “Armenian slander” in the title, negative opinions about Armenian identity are evoked. In this way, the article reinforces the existing prejudice against Armenians and regenerates the perception of enmity.

4.

Yeni Akit, 9 October 2018

In the article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Koç books spread poison”, homosexuality is repeatedly labelled as “immoral” and “perverted”. Homosexuality is represented as a “threat” against society as we seen in the following statement: “Working night and day to corrupt Turkish people, the Crusader West attacks from far and wide through its local servants. Networks of evil that aim to infect small children with perversion of homosexuality use books as poison machines.” Thus, the newspaper contributes to normalization and spread of discrimination and violence against LGBTIs.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
