Within October 15-21, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against homosexuals, Jews, Armenians and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Bursa A Gazete, 19 October 2018

In the article published in Bursa A Gazetesi with the title “Don’t escalate the tension!”, the tension between the ship Barbaros Hayrettin operating in Turkish continental shelf in East Mediterranean and a Greek frigate is reported with the remark “Turks’ response to Greeks”. Thus, the newspaper attributes a political issue between states to the entire national identity; it incites enmity between peoples by establishing an opposition between Turkish and Greek identities.

Günebakış, 18 October 2018

Hüseyin Albayrak, in his column titled “I cannot love the cruel”, repeats a war discourse from the past with the following statements: “Does this nation know about Muslim Turkish women who were kidnapped and dishonored, our paragon of honor sisters who jumped off cliffs or threw themselves into the waters of Lake Van to save their honor, and gut-wrenching situation of our mothers in Van under Moscow-backed Armenian occupation during WW I?” and “How can Armenians be friends with Turks?” Don’t forget the treasons and murders that they committed anytime they had the chance. Armenians are still the same.” The columnist portrays Armenians as enemies by associating them with violence and massacre.

Takvim, 16 October 2018

In the article published in Takvim with the title “They are hostile even to olives”, all Jews are hold responsible for the incident with generalizing statements: “Jews are hostile even to olive trees. A group of Jewish settlers cut down 140 olive trees belonging to Palestinians in various places of the West Bank.” Thus, the newspaper reinforces prejudices and enmity against Jews.

İstiklal, 15 October 2018

In the article published in İstiklal with the title “May God curse you” homosexuality is repeatedly labelled as “immoral” and “perverted.” Homosexuality is represented as a threat and homosexuals are marginalized as we see in the article summary: “A video shared on social media shows that homosexuality, which caused the destruction of the people of Lot, became common now. May God curse the ones who support and live this perversion.” Thus, the newspaper contributes to normalization and spread of discrimination and violence against homosexuals.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work
