Within October 29 - November 4, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Armenians, Syrians, non-Muslims, Jews and Christians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Kadirli Postası, 3 November 2018

Mahmut Es’ad Çoşan, in his column that he wrote in 1992 and was republished by Kadirli Postası with title “General flaw of Muslim world” , criticizes Iranian state: “They provide arms aid not to Azerbaijanis with whom they share their faith, communion and even origins, but to cruel, ruthless, wrong and blood-thirsty Armenians.” In this way, the newspaper represents Armenian society as enemy. Moreover, it escalates prejudices against them by using descriptions like “cruel”, “ruthless”, “wrong”, and “blood-thirsty”.

Mersin İmece, 31 October 2018

Cengiz Çoşkun, in his column titled “Consensus on national issues is necessary”, makes a connection between the deterioration of Turkey’s economy and Syrian presence in Turkey as we see in the following sentence: “33 billion was spent on these Syrians who ruined our economy.” Furthermore, he cements the prejudices against Syrians: “It is unacceptable to spend this money for Syrians who roam around and have plenty of children instead of our people.” Thus, Syrians are perceived as damaging Turkish economy and discrimination against Syrians is incited.

Yeni Söz, 29 October 2018

In the article published in Yeni Söz with the title “Nobody sees Christian and Jewish terrorism”, Jews and Christians are repeatedly associated with massacre and “terrorism” as see in the following sentence: “The entire world is shaken by individual or collective massacres of non-Muslim terrorists, especially Jews and Christians. From Europe to Americas, Christian and Jewish terrorist organizations carry out genocides all around the world and kill indiscriminately.” Thus, the article causes escalation of prejudices and enmity against Jews and Christians.

Diriliş Postası, 29 October 2018

Muzaffer Kahraman, in his column titled “Captivation begins where courage ends...”, writes: “Do giaours kill Muslims? Yes, they do. But why? Because they are Muslims” and “Because these radical Islamophobes, these inglorious savages cannot bear the increase in the number of Muslims. ‘The best Muslim is the dead Muslim’ is their eternal motto.” With these remarks, he provokes the reader against non-Muslims and labels them as enemies.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
