Within January 22-28, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Jews, Christians, non-Muslims and Buddhists as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Akit, January 28, 2018

Nusret Yusufoğlu, in his column titled “Don’t let the pigs in the ‘olive branch’ garden”, writes: “I mean, you just can’t trust the giaours, who are Jews and Christians according to Quran. They even refer to Allah as God. How can we trust them?” In this way, he portrays Jews and Christians as enemies by reinforcing negative judgments about them. Also, he consolidates the enmity against non-Muslims with the word giaour, which is used as an expression of hatred and defamation for non-Muslim identities in Turkey.

Doğru Haber, January 26, 2018

M. Zülküf Yel, in his column titled "Human tragedy in Arakan and Jerusalem", writes: “Persecutions inflicted to Muslims by savage Buddhist gangs and Burmese army continue, though genocide of Rohingya Muslim is off the agenda now for various reasons. Buddhists have been burning the houses and villages down for displacing Muslims; now, it became a routine practice.” With these remarks, he holds all Buddhists responsible for the events and leads the reader to think negatively about Buddhists.

Yeni Konya, January 25, 2018

The article published in Yeni Konya with the title “The Jew demolished the house of the Palestinian” attributes the incident to the members of an identity with generalizing expressions. Thus, the newspaper escalates prejudices and enmity against Jews.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
