Within December 18-24, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Syrians, Buddhists, Greeks and Rûms as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Yeni Çağrı, December 22, 2017

Atilla Çilingir, in his article titled “Unforgettable cries!...”, writes “Each December 21st tells the tragedy of the humanity in Cyprus, the cruelty of the Rûms and how they wanted to eliminate the Turkish nation altogether!” and “Because it was still a 16-day-old baby! While its tiny body was becoming soil while alive; it was so young that it could not even perceive the presence of Rûm murderers...”, and with such statements he associates the Rûm identity with ‘cruelty’ and ‘massacre’ throughout the whole article. The author demonizes the Rûm identity through statements containing elements of enmity and hate and incites the readers against them.

2.

Siirt, December 21, 2017

The news article published by the newspaper Siirt with the title “IMMEDIATE RESPONSE FROM CHP TO THE INSOLENT JEWS!” covers the statement made by Engin Altay, a Member of Parliament for the Republican People's Party (CHP), which targets the statements of the Greek Defense Minister, using expressions insulting the Greek identity in the title. The news article causes reinforcement of the negative sentiments towards the Jews and fuelling of hostility against the Greeks.

3.

Yeni Akit, December 20, 2017

The article published by the newspaper Yeni Akit with the title “Buddhists burnt the tiny girl” conveys the massacre and acts of violence covered in the article with statements that bring all Buddhists under suspicion. The article also insults the Buddhists with statements such as “It makes your heart bleed when the Arakanians who managed to save their lives from the genocide carried out by the Buddhists are telling the extent of the cruelty”. Therefore, the article enmitizes Buddhists by attributing the responsibility of the attacks and acts of violence concerned to an entire identity.

4.

Bursa Sancak, December 18, 2017

The article published in the newspaper Bursa Sancak with the title “SYRIAN ‘FALSE BRIDE’ WAS ARRESTED” emphasizes the national identity of the suspect and the Syrian identity is thus associated with crime. The newspaper thus fuels the already existing prejudice towards Syrians in the society.
