Within December 11-17, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Germans, Jews, Syrians and LGBTIs as well as the analyses written about them below.1


1.

Takvim, December 15, 2017

The news article published in the newspaper Takvim with the title “TRAKESTİ (Tra(nsvestite) cut)” covers a judicial case emphasizing the sexual identity of the subject although it is not directly related to the event. The news article contains statements such as “THE TRANSVESTITE WHO SPREAD FEAR WAS ARRESTED IN A SHORT TIME” in the main title, “A transvestite attacked people passing by with a cut-throat razor. He cut the ear of Kerem, an 18-year-old…” in the lead and “Transvestite WITH A CUT THROAT RAZOR spread terror”, which emphasize the sexual identity of the subject many and associate transgender individuals with violence and crime. The news article reinforces the existing transphobia and prejudice and legitimizes discrimination and violence towards transgender individuals.

Kayseri Star Haber, December 14, 2017

The news article published in the newspaper Kayseri Star Haber with the title “SYRIAN MOLESTER SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS” emphasizes the national identity of the suspect, thereby associating all Syrians with crime. The newspaper causes spread of a negative perception towards the Syrians and coding of Syrians as an element of ‘threat’.

Yeni Şafak, December 12, 2017

İsmail Kılıçarslan, in his article titled “The issue is not Zionism but Judaism”, writes: “There are no ‘Israeli settlers’, there are ‘Jewish occupants’. When I say there is no threat of Zionism, there is a problem of Judaism’, I mean it” and “‘Considering Zionism, which was invented not to talk about the problems of Judaism, as a problem does not rule out the fact that ‘Jews are mentally the most dangerous group of people for the world” when tomorrow they say ‘We have given up on Judaism’”, and with such statements he positions Jews as an ‘element of threat’. The author also writes: “Even if the proportion of Muslims who have been involved in terrorism in the world is not even 1 in 1000, all Muslims are being treated as terrorists. And also even if the number of Jews who have not been involved in terrorism in the world is not even five percent, ‘but anti-Semitism is not something we would promote, right?”, and with such negative generalizations he reinforces the negative perceptions towards the Jews, thereby legitimizing and fuelling the enmity towards the Jews.

Yeni Akit, December 12, 2017

The article published in the newspaper Yeni Akit with the title “Hypocrite Germans have been a shield for the Israelis” covers the practices of the German police and statements of politicians in the title and within the text by attributing these to all Germans. The newspaper causes reinforcement of the prejudices against the Germans with such generalizations.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
