Within 18-24 September 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Jews, Buddhists, Armenians and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Ankara Haber Vaktim, September 23, 2017

Muhammed Gömük states in his column titled “Barzani the Jew Grasps Fire - 2”; “And let’s come to the present. Barzani the Jew grasps fire, war bells are ringing. Would bombs fall over the head of the American dog Mesut the Jew on 25 September?” thereby emphasizing the Jewish identity in a negative way with these words and in the title. Therefore, Gömük designates Jews as a threat and drives the enmity against them.

Yeni Akit, September 22, 2017

The newspaper Yeni Akit in the news article titled "CRUEL BUDDHISTS VANDALIZE" attributes the attacks and acts of violence to the Buddhist identity with statements in the article’s title and content such as “Villages of Muslims who run away from the attacks of the Myanmar army and wait for boats to seek refuge in Bangladesh are vandalized by the Buddhists.” and “Muslims in Arakan are running away with naked feet from the oppression of Buddhists.”. Therefore, all Buddhists are associated with violence and enmitized.

Milat, September 20, 2017

Hikmet Hocaoğlu, in his column titled "What is not (cannot be) spoken in this country", with statements such as “Until the 1970s history had been written by an enemy of the Ottomans and Muslims; Emin Oktay the Jew, in this country”, “There was an Armenian called Agop Aratyan at the head of Turkish Language Association until 1978 in this country”, “Deed and Registry Directors were also Jews until 1970s in this country” and “The addressee for that familiar saying ‘If there had been no Atatürk, your name would have been YORGO’ is not us, it is a reproach by crypto Armenians and Jews to Atatürk” marks Armenians and Jews as a ‘hidden threat’ and targets them.

Şok, September 18, 2017

In the news article titled "Attacked with a knife by the Syrians" prepared by the newspaper Şok, all Syrians are brought under suspicion based on an isolated event with an emphasis on the national identities of the suspects. Therefore, Syrians are associated with violence fuelling the already existing prejudice and discrimination against them.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
