Within 11-17 September 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Greeks, Jews, LGBTIs and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Adana Günaydın, September 16, 2017

In the news article titled “The Syrian was caught with 800 opiate drugs and arrested” published by the newspaper Adana Günaydın, an isolated event is reported by making an emphasis on the national identity of the suspect despite the absence of any direct connection. Therefore, Syrians are associated with crime and prejudices against them are fueled based on a singular event.

Yeni Akit, September 15, 2017

In the news article titled “This ‘contemptible’ book should be immediately pulled off the shelf" published by the newspaper Yeni Akit, it is stated that “Homosexual deviance that has increased extremely and destroyed family structure in the Western countries, is rapidly becoming widespread also in Turkey. It was found that the deviance propaganda has also found a place in the books in Turkey, where movies that encourage homosexuality are shot with huge budgets, unisex toilets are opened in universities, bridges are illuminated and LGBTI flags are hung.” With such statements, the perception that LGBTIs threaten the society’s structure is reinforced and LGBTIs are insulted. The newspaper thus causes prejudice and discrimination against LGBTIs in the society to be normalized and to become widespread.

İstiklal, September 13, 2017

The news article titled “God has spoilt the game of the Jews” published in the newspaper İstiklal associates all Jews with violence and persecution throughout the entire text with statements such as “JEWISH ATROCITY” and “God has disciplined Jews, who went too far, deviated, killed the prophets sent to them and jailed those great-hearted people who showed them the right way, with one zoroastrian servant of his”. The newspaper thus dehumanizes Jews and fuels enmity against Jews.

Yeni Mesaj, September 11, 2017

The newspaper Yeni Mesaj brings all Greeks under suspicion and associates all Greeks with violence and massacre in the news articles titled "Witness described Greek atrocity" on the first page and "Greeks massacred so in Anatolia” on the inner pages. The newspaper thus recirculates a discourse of enmity against Greeks coming from the past and fuels enmity between these peoples.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
