Within July 3-9, 2017, three news articles that generate hate speech were selected from the print media. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Greeks, Syrians and non-Muslims as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Yeni Akit, July 7, 2017

The news article titled “Nothing has changed on the part of the giaour” on the first page and “STRONG REACTION FROM TURKEY to the crappy decision made by the EP” on the inner page published by the newspaper Yeni Akit addresses the European Parliament approving the report that proposes suspension of the negotiations between Turkey and the European Union. The newspaper fuels enmity towards non-Muslim identities in Turkey with the word ‘giaour’ used in the title of the news article, which is used as an expression of hate and humiliation for these identities.

2.

Sözcü, July 4, 2017

In the news article in Sözcü titled “Terrifying claim” on the first page and “Syrians have brought AIDS” on the inner page, the following statements by Fikri Sağlar, a CHP Member of Parliament, are cited: "It is claimed that the refugee women who have fallen victim to prostitution gangs have caused an increase in the prevalence of AIDS in Mersin. This irritates our citizens. The refugees not only distort the internal socioeconomic dynamics of the society, but they also deeply unsettle public health", which mark and target Syrian refugees as a ‘threat’ both in socioeconomic and in health terms. The newspaper carries discriminatory and otherizing statements to the title of the news article and supports this discourse with the statement “Scary statement from Fikri Sağlar, CHP member of parliament”. It thus contributes to spreading of the discrimination and hate which the Syrians are often exposed to in the society.

3.

Türkiye, July 4, 2017

A gunfire opened by a Greek Security Boat on a cargo ship is brought to the title such that the whole Greek identity is brought under suspicion in the news article published by the newspaper Türkiye with the title “GREEK FIRE” on the first page and “GREEK FIRE on the Turkish ship” on the inner page. Therefore, the newspaper targets Greeks by recirculating the enmity discourse coming from the past.
