The short film Kameralı Çocuk (The Boy with Camera) was screened in Hrant Dink Foundation Havak Hall on March 22. After the screening organized by ASULIS Discourse, Dialog, Democracy Laboratory, a talk was held with the participation of the actor, director and coordinator of the movie.
Before the screening and talk, Şenay Özden from Koç University Sociology Department made a presentation on legal status of Syrian refugees living in Turkey, their socioeconomic conditions and the discrimination they are faced with in terms of education, healthcare, employment and accommodation. After Özden’s presentation, Pınar Ensari, the coordinator of Media Watch on Hate Speech project conducted by Hrant Dink Foundation, talked about the findings concerning the representation of Syrian refugees in Turkish print press after 2015.
The talk was moderated by Şenay Özden, and the director İbrahim Yeşilbaş, the coordinator Yılmaz Delen and the actor Jwan Abdo talked about their experiences during and after the shooting.
Saying that they thought about ask Jwan Abdo’s help during the shooting, Delen and Yeşilbaş said that they decided to shape the movie based on his story, once they realized that he is very passionate about cinema. Yeşilbaş stated that they narrated the true story of Jwan Abdo differently in a fictional universe and they created this fictional universe by making Jwan repeat his past experiences throughout the movie.
Saying that the camera of Jwan Abdo who interviews Syrians in Turkey with a broken camera is the main subject of the movie, Yeşilbaş stated that they managed to conduct the interviews in the movie and bond with people thanks to that camera.
Film summary: Jwan has escaped from the war in Syria and come to Turkey. In the daytime he works at a clothing store and during rest of his daily life he writes scripts. He wants to be a film-director. With an old camera in his hand, he makes conversations with them who come from Syria and trains his camera on them. People share their own dramas, disappointments, hopes and hopelessness with Jwan.
