Within August 7-13, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech had been selected from print media for the weekly report. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Syrians, Buddhists, Greeks and Jews and the analyses below.1
.In the article that was published in İstiklal and titled “JEWISH ATROCITIES” and “Where does the ‘Jewish’ name come from?”, Jews are associated with violence and atrocity with expressions such as “If it is asked of a people who see their race as a superior, the answer given without hesitation will be Jews. Jews, who killed in the past even the prophets who were sent by Allah and who invited them to search for the right way, continues the tyranny of their ancestors today. Istiklal opens the file of Jewish atrocities.” The newspaper, therefore, dehumanizes Jewish people and incites enmity and hatred towards them. |
.In the article that was published in Sözcü with the title of “There is church bells but no adhan” on the first page and with the title of “In our occupied islands, there church bells but no adhan” inside, Greeks are labeled as a possible threat with expressions such as “Greeks erect churches in our islands but no one sees it” and “Bulamaç Island in Aydın belongs to us but Greeks erect churches.” Hence, the newspaper incites hatred and enmity against Greeks. |
.In Milli Gazete newspaper’s article titled “NO HUMANITY IN THIS REPORT!”, with the remarks of “Even if the systematic Buddhist violence and rape against Arakanese Muslims, who struggle to survive and live their religion in difficult conditions is revealed, there is no reaction from the world”, and “BUDDISTS, THAT SUBJECT MUSLIMS TO A SYSTEMATIC GENOCIDE, MASSACRED THOUSANDS OF MUSLIMS WITH INHUMAN METHODS”, all Buddhists are held responsible for aforesaid massacre and acts of violence. Therefore, Buddhists are associated with violence and are portrayed as enemies and a ‘threat’ for Muslims. |
.In Sözcü newspaper's article titled “Syrians objected to the bill with gun and knife: 2 dead”, the national identity of the suspects is emphasized repeatedly in the headline, content and “Police is hunting for the Syrian” subheading. In this way, Syrians are associated with crime and the prejudices against them are incited in the society. |
