Within May 8-14 May, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech had been selected from print media for the weekly report. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Kurds, Syrians, Jews and Greeks and the analyses below.1

Dokuz Sütun, May 12, 2017

The article that was published in Dokuz Sütun and titled “Buddhists in Myanmar attacked Muslims” attributes the violent actions to all Buddhist people. Hence, Buddhists are associated with violence and labeled  as a possible threat  to Muslim people and enemies of them.

Yeni Akit, May 11, 2017

In her article titled “The Assassination of Denizli Chief Public Prosecutor! Mice and Men…”, Mehtap Yılmaz insults LGBTI people with expressions such as  “LGBT perverts…”, “Homo-Feto dabbler sexually abused the toilet cleaner”, “…a nasty man called Tuncay Opçin, a LGBT person…”. She incites prejudice and discrimination against LGBTI people by positioning them as a threat to society.

Milat Gazetesi, May 10, 2017

In Milat’s article titled “Jews set fire to 30 vehicles”, all Jewish people are held responsible for the arson attack. The newspaper, therefore, incites enmity and hatred towards Jewish people.

Korkusuz, May 8, 2017

In the article titled “Syrians killed the son of the boss and ran away”, which was published in Korkusuz, this disjunctive event has become associated with the national identity of Syrian people. Hence, all Syrian people are codified as a threat to society and  targeted by being criminalized.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
