Within March 27 - April 2, 2017, four news articles that generate hate speech had been selected for the weekly report. You can find these articles that generate hate speech against Bulgarians, Germans, non-Muslims and LGBTIs and the analyses below.1
1.In Yeni Akit newspaper's article titled "Perversion in Robert College", it is stated: "Perversion of gay-lesbian, which is inflicted by sources of evil that do whatever they can to corrupt Muslim Turkish society, spread to schools. American Robert College has joined the choir of perverts that presents the illness called homosexuality as a normal and humane situation." The newspaper defines sexual orientations and identities, which is called perversion throughout the article, as "illness" and triggers the understanding that LGBTIs are a threat to the social structure. In this way, the newspaper affirms, normalizes and spreads prejudices and hatred against LGBTIs. |
2.Yeni Akit newspaper's article, which is featured with the title of "Giaour talk in Koç Museum" on the front page and with the title of "GIAOUR TALK IN THE MUSEUM OF KOÇ" inside, reinforces the enmity against non-Muslim identites, since it usedsthe word "giaour", which is used as a word denoting hatred and insult against non-Muslim beliefs in Turkey. |
3.In Diriliş Postası, an article titled "Traditional CHP tactic from fascist Germans" is featured on the front page and inside. The article states: "Stating that Germans have the fear of 'yes', Kalın said, 'Given that the Bild is using Atatürk, it seems that they are desperate. Let me remind you once again: the decision is not yours, the nation will decide.'" With this statement and the title, Germans are labeled as "fascist". In this way, the newspaper escalates prejudices against German identity and provokes the reader against the Germans. |

Star daily's article, which is featured on the front page with the title of "BULGARIAN TORTURE" and with the title of “TORTURE OF BALLOT AND ALPHABET TO TURKS” inside, covers “the obstacles of Bulgarian government to the Turks who try to vote in the parliamentary election in Bulgaria”. The newspaper features the practices of the Bulgarian government with the title of “Bulgarian torture” and thus associates the Bulgarian identity with torture and incites hatred against Bulgarians. |

Within the scope of the media scanning work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are scanned based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) by the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
