Within May 4-10, 2020, four articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against  LGBTI people, Greeks, French and Cypriot Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1


1. 

Aydınlık, 7 Mayıs 2020

In the article published in Aydınlık with the title “LGBTI funded by the US and the EU” LGBTI individuals are labeled as a “threat” against society due to their sexual orientations and gender identities: “The funding catalogue issued by KAOS GL, which is working in the field of LGBTI in Turkey, is interesting. The catalogue lists all the supporters of LGBTI propaganda, which is recently reached even to children. The US Embassy in the list hosts the organizations in Turkey and organizes meetings. Orange revolution sponsor Soros is also an important source of funding” and “Şişli City Council LGBTI Committee under the municipality tried to give the impression that children can be homosexual too with April 23 Children’s Day posters”. Thus, the article cause normalization and spread of discrimination and prejudices against LGBTIs.


2. 

Karadeniz Gazetesi, 9 Mayıs 2020

The article published in Karadeniz with the title “Cold shower to Greeks” reports recent developments in drilling works in Eastern Mediterranean. In title, political issues between states are attributed to national identity and Greeks are held responsible. Thus, existing prejudices against Greeks are fomented.


3. 

Yeni Akit, 9 Mayıs 2020

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “They haven’t forgotten the French genocide” reports Algerian President’s statements. With the title and subheading “So-called civilized French”, the French are held responsible by the emphasis on national identity. The article also foments the perception of enmity by associating French identity with violence and massacre: “Having a violent history, the French now gives speeches of ‘civility and human rights’, but their genocides and massacre will never be forgotten.”


4. 

İttifak Gazetesi, 8 Mayıs 2020

The article published in İttifak Gazetesi with the title ““Greeks revealed their cruelty, Turks showed their compassion” reports Greek coast guard’s treatment of refugees and human rights violations. The actions of the coast guard are attributed to Greeks with the choice of title through an opposition between Turks and Greeks. Thus, the article foments the existing enmity against Greeks.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
