1.

Türkiye'de Yeniçağ, 12 Mart 2020
Yeniçağ, March 12, 2020

Arslan Tekin opens his column with the following remark: “We talked about Muscovites yesterday. Muscovite is an enemy. It doesn’t matter if he is a communist or not.” And then he quotes from Mr. Kenan’s letter to support his own ideas: “Mr. Arslan, I’ve been reading Z.V. Togan’s novels. What I understood from the memoirs is that our people had a reason to call Russians ‘Muscovite’. Lenin, Stalin and others were always hypocritical against Islamic and Turkish elements”, “Just like Greek megali idea…” Similar remarks are seen throughout the column. As it is seen, humiliating expressions are used and a hostile attitude is expressed by emphasizing that Greek and Russian identities are natural enemies of Turkish identity.

2.

Türkgün, March 12, 2020

In his column, Mustafa Önder uses an insulting and hostile discourse against Greek identity as we see in the following sentence: “Even though their mothers, fathers and brothers are fighting against the infidel Greeks…”

3.

In the news article, Diriliş Postası reports violent treatment of refugees by Greek security forces by using the word “Greek” in title; thus it attributes the violence inflicted by institutions to Greek identity.

4.

Lüleburgaz Gazetesi, 13 Mart 2020
Lüleburgaz Hürfikir Gazetesi, March 13, 2020

In the column criticizing CHP Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu’s criticism against Turkey’s Syrian and migration policy, Nusayri identity is associated with civil war and massacres in Syria, and hate speech is generated by labeling Alevi and Armenian identities and natives of Tunceli as “traitor” and “enemy” as we see in the following remarks: “Esad belongs to the Nusayri community, which is 10% of the population, meaning that 90% will either die or leave Syria”, “It is known that he [Kılıçdaroğlu] is Alevi and Esad is Nusyari, maybe Iran feels close to Shiite with denominational concerns”, “That’s why those from Tunceli have a serious enmity against ‘Turkey and Atatürk’”, “That is why majority of Tunceli youth is either PKK members or communists”, “Considering that his mother is Armenian…”, and “Is this why he is always against Turkey, siding with our enemies?”

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
