Within February 3-9, 2020, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against Cypriot Greeks, Greeks and Jews  as well as the analyses written about them below.1

In the article published in Ortadoğu with the title “Who needs Greeks?”, Greek identity is associated with rape and murder: “Greeks who murdered Turks, even children in bathtubs and raped women.” The article also features hostile comments like “Talking like Greeks”.

In the article published in Yeni Şafak with the title “Racist Greek will be punished”, Greek identity is associated with racism. Claiming all Greeks are racist, this title foments negative sentiments about Greeks.

In the article published in Milli Gazete with the title “Jews are trouble, lying constantly”, a book’s hate speech against Jews is affirmed. Jewish identity is associated with lying, trouble and war.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
