Within January 27 and February 2, 2020, two articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find three articles that contain hate speech against Armenians and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1
1.The article published in Yeniçağ with the title “Penalty for those who oppose Armenian lies” reports the claim that France is working to enforce legal action against Armenian Genocide deniers. The article associates Armenian identity with lying in the title, reinforcing negative sentiments about Armenians. |
2.In the article published in Milat with the title “Greek barrier to migrants”, the actions of the Greek government and officials are associated with Greek identity. Through a generalization suggesting that all Greeks are anti-migrant, negative judgments about the identity are fomented. |
1.Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
