Within April 1-7, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Cypriot Greeks and Armenians as well as the analyses written about them below.1
1.Ata Atun, in his column titled “Byzantine tricks by Cypriot Greeks”, mentions the policies of politicians in Southern Cyprus in the title by attributing it to all Greeks. Thus, the columnist portrays Greeks as a threat and foments negative opinions about and enmity against them. |
2.The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “They are waiting like hyenas” criticizes the coverage of local elections held in Turkey on March 31 by some media outlets based in the US and European countries. With the generalizing title “Ecstasy in Greece”, Greeks are labeled as a threat and negative opinions about them are fomented. |
3.Günel Melikova, in her column titled “Baku Massacre”, associates Armenian identity with massacre and violence as we see in the following sentences: “It’s been more than a century since the Azerbaijani genocide carried out by Armenians”, “For centuries, Armenians carried out a planned war policy for implementing their disgusting ideas” and “Benefiting from the opportunity they got, Armenians slaughtered thousands of innocent people including children, elderly and women, and destroyed a large part of Baku by vastly damaging Azerbaijani people’s national treasures”. Thus, the columnist foments the perception of enmity against Armenians. |
1.Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
