Within January 28- February 3, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Greeks, Jews, and LGBTIs as well as the analyses written about them below. 1
1.The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “Greece’s 12 miles eyewash” reports Greece’s decision to expand its territorial waters. The newspaper also mentions Turkey’s demand for extradition of fugitive soldiers in Greece to Turkey. In this section, Greek media’s perspective on this matter is defined as the following “The newspaper defined Turkey’s criticism against Greece over extradition of 8 fugitive FETÖ members as ‘Turkish threats’, which is a typical Greek attitude” and negative sentiments about Greek identity are evoked. Thus, the newspaper reinforces the perception of enmity against Greeks. |
2.The article published in Milat with the title “Jews 'racist attack' in the West Bank” reports the racist attack to Palestinians’ cars in the West Bank. In the article, all Jews are held responsible for the writings in question. Thus, the newspaper associates Jewish identity with racism, reinforcing negative sentiments about Jews. |
3.The article published in Karaman Gündem with the title “Transvestites who stabbed a person reacted to journalists reporting” reports an incident of bodily harm happened in Karaman. The reported criminal incident is covered with an emphasis on the perpetrator’s gender identity though it is not directly related to the incident. The newspaper reinforces transphobia and discrimination against LGBTIs by carrying on the emphasis on the perpetrator’s gender identity. |
