Within April 15-21, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against the French, Greeks, Syrians and Armenians as well as the analyses written about them below. 1

1.

Diriliş Postası, 19 April 2019

In the article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “the French support Greeks too”, further military cooperation between France and Greece is reported with reference to French and Greek people. When the article and the summary “Enhancing its alliance with the US, Greece is also improving relations with France, which is another traditional enemy of Turks” is reviewed together, it is seen that the French and Greeks are represented as “anti-Turk” and these identities are labeled as a threat.

2.

Ankara Milliyet, 19 April 2019

In the article published in Ankara Milliyet with the title “Illegal health care service again”, Syrian identity is emphasized in a negative manner in the summary “Two Syrians who provide health care service in their unlicensed office are caught” though it is not directly related to the incident. Thus, the newspaper causes reinforcement of existing prejudices against Syrians.

3.

Kastamonu Açıksöz, 16 April 2019

Mehmet Sayan, in his column titled “Treason”, labels Armenians as “traitors” and associates them with violence as we see in the following sentences: “These behaviors of Armenians who humiliates Turks shock the Turkish youth who listened to this story. Some of them even cried. For years, they treated them as one of them and had never done anything bad to them. They did everything they can for living together in peace. But now, Armenians were stabbing Turks in the back during dire times. This was treacherous. These behaviors of Armenians lead to the strengthening of cooperation among Turkish youth and deciding to act together against the enemy” and “After the war was won, Armenians who tormented Turks and stabbed them in the back fled to Kastamonu before the youth returned from the lines”. Thus, the columnist demonizes Armenian identity with remarks containing elements of enmity and hatred.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
