Within May 20-26, 2019 three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Arabs, non-Muslims and LGBTIs as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Ordu Vizyon, 25 May 2019

Şinasi Kara, in his column titled “Knowing history”, foments negative opinions about Arabs as we see in the following statements: “Rebel Arabs killed thousands of helpless hospitalized Turkish soldiers with bayonets” and “They didn’t teach us that Arabs break their promises”. The author presents Arabic identity as a threat and incites enmity against them.

Milli Gazete, 21 May 2019

Mahmut Toptaş, in his column titled “The giaour supports the giaour”, uses the world “giaour”, which is used as an expression of hatred and insult against non-Muslims in Turkey as a reference for insult and reinforces rooted negative opinions about non-Muslims.

Bor'un Sesi, 21 May 2019

Recep Ulusoy, in his column titled “Efforts for destroying the families”, presents LGBTIs as pervert and labels them as a threat against society due to their sexual orientations and gender identities as we see in the following sentence: “All illegal relationships especially LGBTI perversion are encouraged though YouTubers, famous actors and social media celebrities who are followed especially by the youth”. Thus, the author causes normalization and spread of discrimination and violence that target LGBTIs.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
