Within November 25 - December 1, 2019, two articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find two articles that contain hate speech against Greeks and Jews as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Konya, 28 November 2019

The article published in Yeni Konya with the title “The Jew wounds 15 Palestinian” reports the alleged clash between Israeli soldiers and Palestinians in the West Bank. By holding Jews responsible for the incident in the title, the newspaper accuses all Jews, reinforcing negative opinions about the identity.

Sözcü, 27 November 2019

The article published in Sözcü with the title “Hypocrite UEFA” reports the change of referee in a football game. The claim that this change is made due to the request of a party of the game is highlighted with the following remark: “Turkish referee is changed because Greeks wanted.” Thus, the article opposes Greek and Turkish identities and creates a relationship of enmity between two identities.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
