Within September 23-29, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Armenians, Jews, and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Konya, 26 September 2019

The newspaper Yeni Konya covers an incident with an emphasis on religious identity in the title as “Arrogant Jew”. With this insulting word, all Jews are degraded and the perception of enmity is fomented.


2. 

Star, 24 September 2019

The article published in Star with the title “Armenians martyred Azerbaijani soldier” reports the Azerbaijani soldier who was allegedly killed by the Armenian army. The article refers to the incident in the title by holding all Armenians responsible and foments enmity against Armenians.


3. 

Yeni Akit, 23 September 2019

According to the claim made in the newspaper Yeni Akit’s article title “They beat refugees up and then sent them back”, the refugees who are subjected to violence of Greek border security are sent back to Turkey. With the title “Greeks beat them up and sent them to Turkey again” and the remark “That’s Greek mentality”, the violence inflicted by Greek border security soldiers is attributed to all Greeks. Thus, the article associates Greek identity with violence, regenerating negative opinions about this identity.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
