Within September 9-15, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Syrians and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Diriliş Postası, 13 September 2019

The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “Greeks benefit from the explosion” reports the aftermath of an explosion in Kyrenia. With the title and the statement “While all the details of the region including its coordinates are shared, Greeks immediately started to push the propaganda that claims ‘It’s Turkish military’s fault’”, Greeks are mentioned with negative sentiments and the enmity against Greeks is reinforced.


2.

Sözcü, 15 September 2019

The incident covered by the newspaper Sözcü with an article titled “Fined to 64,000 liras because of Syrians” is reported by attributing it to the Syrians in the title. The article reinforces negative opinions about Syrian identity and targets all Syrians.


3.

Yeni Mesaj, 11 September 2019

The article published in Yeni Mesaj with the title “Greeks get insolent” reports the statements of Southern Cyprus. With the title “Greeks get insolent” and the statement “Cypriot Greeks reacted against Interior Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu’s visit to Northern Cyprus”, the statements of the politicians are attributed to the Greek identity. Thus, the article reinforces negative opinions about Greeks and foments the perception of enmity.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
