Within May 6-12, 2019, two articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against homosexuals and Jews as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Akit, 7 May 2019

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Westerners stopped punishment for homosexuality” covers Brunei State’s plans to penalize LGBTIs due to their sexual orientations. In the article, with statements such as “Westerners advocating perversion forced Brunei that cleared the way for punishing homosexuality to postpone the law”, homosexuals are repeatedly presented as a pervert and labeled as a “threat” against society because of their gender identities.

Yeni Konya, 6 May 2019

The article published in Yeni Konya with the title “Jews became rabid” reports Israel’s attacks to the West Bank. In the article, Jewish identity is held responsible for the attacks perpetrated by Israeli security forces. Thus, the article reinforces enmity against Jews.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
