Within August 26-September 1, 2019, three articles that generate hate speech were selected from print media. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Syrians, Arabs, Armenians, and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Çanakkale Kalem, 28 August 2019

Ufuk Çankaya, in his column titled “Do you realize that we don’t realize?”, makes descriptions with negative prejudices against Arabs and Syrians throughout the column as we see in the following remarks: “The side of Sarıçay, bus terminal are full, wonderful Syrians take the position to attack Çanakkale. Soon, locals of Çanakkale will learn what living with Syrians is like”, “The ruling party took its love for Arabs to the extreme and brought its Arab friends to Çanakkale”, “The government made a historic mistake by inflicting Syrians upon us”, “We cannot manage to stop femicides. The society is going mad. Syrians are a part of it. Our society is in the process of assimilation to two cultures”, “Arab men prefer to live their sexuality among themselves. Their sexual perversion is even in the scriptures. A prophet arrived after each perversion of them” and “For Arabs, the masters of sodomizing, women have no place in the world”. He also adopts a homophobic attitude and defines these identities as active subjects in femicides in Turkey. Thus, the column reinforces negative opinions about Arabs and Syrians and presents them as a “threat” against society.

Bizim Anadolu, 26 August 2019

The article published in Bizim Anadolu with the title “Serious juridical blow to Armenians in the US” covers the lawsuit against Republic of Turkey, Turkish Central Bank and Ziraat Bank over the Armenian Genocide. By reporting the dismissal of the case in the appeal process with the headline “Serious juridical blow to Armenians in the US”, it holds all Armenians responsible for the incident. Thus, the article escalates the perception of enmity toward Armenian identity.

Milli Gazete, 29 August 2019

The article published in Milli Gazete with the title “Greeks are obsessed with Turkey” reports the statements made by Southern Cyprus about drilling work in the Mediterranean Sea. By reporting the issue with the title “Greeks are obsessed with Turkey”, the article holds all Greeks responsible. Thus, it foments the existing prejudice and enmity against Greek identity.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
