Within June 25 - July 1, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles targeting LGBTIs because of the pride week as well as the analyses written about them below.1

1.

Yeni Akit, 29 June 2018

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Patrons of homos in the parliament" covers the elected deputies who signed the “LGBTI+ Rights Covenant” with descriptions insulting LGBTI individuals both in the title and text. LGBTIs, who are associated with “disease” as we see in the statement “LGBTI disease that is a major problem in Western societies and tried to be spread in the east for corrupting Eastern societies is always on the agenda”, are labeled as “pervert” and insulted throughout the article. Furthermore, under “Stop this march” title, the newspaper calls for cancellation of Pride March that was planned to be held in Taksim.

2.

Milli Gazete, 27 June 2018

In Milli Gazete’s headline story titled “Moral limits are breached”, LGBTIs are repeatedly labeled as “pervert” and insulted as we see in the sub-heading “Society is forced to accept perversion.” Furthermore, LGBTIs are portrayed as a “threat” against society because of their gender identities and sexual orientations as we see in the following remarks: “Perverts having LGBTI disease are getting ready to spread immortality in Istanbul once again” and “LGBTI organizations, activists, unions, various student groups and some political parties will attend shameful events that will be held for the 26th time in this year. The theme of this year’s shameful events is ‘borders’ and various perversions and immoralities will be exhibited in guise of ‘workshop’, ‘panel’, ‘talk’, ‘screening’ and ‘party’.” In this way, the newspaper causes normalization and spread of discrimination and violence targeting LGBTIs.

3.

İslahiye'nin Sesi, 26 June 2018

Salih Şimşek, in his column titled “AKSAKAL, KÖKSAKAL VE TOKSAKAL”, writes: “Some pervert, atheist, deist, homo, gay, immoral, faithless, godless and also anti-Islam and anti-nation treacherous creatures are supported by some pathetic people having Muslim identity and it is such a shame…” With this remark, he uses descriptions insulting LGBTIs and portrays them as enemies.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
