Within July 23-29, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Germans, Europeans, Jews and LGBTIs as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeni Konya, 28 July 2018

The article published in Yeni Konya with the title “Vile Jew attacks with stun grenade” covers the incident by holding all Jews responsible for it. In this way, the newspaper reinforces negative opinions about Jewish identity and cements the enmity against Jews.

Güneydoğu Ekspres, 25 July 2018

Faraç Çobanoğlu, in his column titled “German way of racism”, writes: “The debates around the German way of racism which is revealed by the statements of world-famous football player Mesut Özil still continue. The true face of Europe, which guises itself with the notions of democracy and human rights, is brought to light as we dig deeper.” The columnist associates German and European identities with “racism” based on the statements in question. In this way, he reinforces negative opinions about Germans and Europeans.

Takvim, 25 July 2018

The article published in Takvim with the title “Serial Killer” associates transgender people with violence and crime by highlighting the gender identity of the suspect. Thus, the article reinforces the existing transphobia and legitimizes discrimination against transgender people.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
