Within August 6-12, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Bulgarians, Syrians and Armenians as well as the analyses written about them below.1


1.

Milat, 12 August 2018

The article published in Milat with the title “FETÖ nesting in Latin America” covers an interview with TİKA Latin America Coordinate Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Özkan. The newspaper targets Armenians by representing them as the force behind a “hostile” group with titles like “Cooperation with Armenians” and “FETÖ-Armenian Diaspora cooperation”.


2.

Bursa Sancak, 8 August 2018

The article published in Bursa Sancak with the title “Syrians who killed their neighbors arrested” highlights the national identity of the suspects though it is not directly related to the incident. Thus, the article incites a negative perception of Syrians by associating them with crime.

Diriliş Postası, 6 August 2018

The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “Bulgarians committed all kinds of evils here” spreads a discourse of enmity from the past both in the title and in the following statements: “Yes! They will realize that Bulgarians, who fight for civilization, are not civilized, but a bunch of wild, slanderer animals. For Bulgarians, killing Muslims, tainting their honor and attacking their holiest places are routine actions.” Thus, the newspaper provokes the reader against Bulgarians by associating them with violence and enmity.

Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
