Within August 20-26, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Armenians, Buddhists, Greeks and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1
1.The article published in Yeniçağ with the title “Armenians must be removed from the lands they occupy” associates Armenians with occupation. Thus, the newspaper provokes the reader against Armenians and incites enmity between peoples. |
2.In the article published Karar with the title, “Buddhists’ cruelty continues in Myanmar”, Buddhist identity as a whole is hold responsible for the attacks and violence in Myanmar. Thus, Buddhists are associated with violence and portrayed as enemies. |
3.The article published in Türkiye with the title “We won’t forget what Greeks did”, reports a ruling by a Greek court by targeting Greek identity. In this way, the newspaper labels Greeks as enemies and cements prejudices against them. |
4.The article published in Milliyet with the title “Syrian kidnapper’s ‘hostage’ scam” highlights the national identity of the suspect though it is not directly related to the incident. The article reinforces a negative opinion by associating Syrians with crime. |
1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
