Within October 1-7, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Syrians, the Dutch, Jews and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Yeniçağ, 6 October 2018

Cahit Armağan Dilek, in his column titled “Syrian migration is the Trojan Horse”, writes: “Syrians pose such a great threat that national, cultural, political, sociological, security and geopolitical structure of Turkey might change in the medium or long term. Thus, this is a Trojan horse operation. It is interesting that the West encourages Turkey about Syrian refugees” and “It would be naïve to think that Syrians, who will constitute 10% of the population of Turkey in 2040, won’t demand language, education and land. Disintegration of Turkey with the imposition of salafi-jihadist views on Turkish society would mean destruction of the thousand-year-old Turkish land in Anatolia.” With these statements, he represents Syrians as a threat against Turkey. Thus, he cements the existing prejudice, hatred and discrimination against Syrians.

Yeni Akit, 3 October 2018

The article published inYeni Akit with title “Dutch giaours attacked Islam again” reports the demonstration of anti-refugee group PEGIDA by accusing all Dutch people. Dutch people are insulted with the description “Dutch giaours” and the statement “Watching the anti-Islam Dutch perverts, the police stopped the opposing demonstrators” and they are labelled as “anti-Muslim”. Furthermore, the article reinforces the perception of enmity against non-Muslims in Turkey by using the word “giaour”, which is used as an expression of hatred and insult against non-Muslims in Turkey.

Günboyu, 2 October 2018

The article published in Günboyu with the title “Jewish Terrorism” holds all the members of an identity responsible for what happened with generalizing descriptions. In this way, the newspaper incites prejudices and enmity against Jews.

Akşam, 1 October 2018

The article published in Akşam with the title “Greeks torture refugees” reports an action of Greek police by attributing it to Greek identity as a whole. Thus, it reinforces negative opinions about Greeks by associating them with violence.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
