Within October 22-28, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Westerners, non-Muslims and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Milat, 26 October 2018

Muhammed Özkılınç, in his column titled “Destroy a family and get destroyed”, writes: “They have no people left. They only have people like stray robots. They became animals who think that life is only about eating, drinking, sleeping and mating. Western people became creatures that don’t know why they are here like animals” and “It is even more ironic to feel inferior to those rusty crowds.” With these remarks, he insults and defames Westerners and cements prejudices against them.

Yeni Akit, 23 October 2018

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Haçlı’nın derdi İslâm’la” uses the word “giaour” in the subheading and cements the perception of enmity against non-Muslim with the word “giaour” which is used as an expression of hatred and insult against non-Muslims in Turkey.

Gaziantep Olay Gazetesi, 22 October 2018

The article published in Gaziantep Olay Gazetesi with the title “Great operation to Syrian dealers” repeatedly highlights the national identity of the suspects as we see in the following title: “Syrian dealers, that’s all we need”. In this way, the newspaper reinforces the perception of threat and prejudices against Syrians.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
