Organized as part of Media Watch on Hate Speech project with the support of Friedrich Naumann Foundation, News Discussion Workshop was held on December 25 and children’s place in media, themes and discourses used in representing children, children’s participation in media and children’s rights based journalism had been discussed with the participation of people from different circles of the society. The workshop was facilitated by Ezgi Koman, who works in the field of children’s rights, and journalist Yüce Yöney and held in Hrant Dink Foundation Anarad Hığutyun Building.
The participants were selected among those who applied to the open invitation. In addition to project team and the facilitators, undergraduate and graduate students from journalism, TV journalism, educational sciences departments, and journalists, news editors and civil society professionals attended the workshop.
The workshop started with Ezgi Koman’s presentation that provides information on child, childhood and children’s rights and assesses children’s representation and participation in media. Starting with Yüce Yöney’s assessment on media’s general attitude in child journalism, the discussion continued with participants’ contributions and questions. Children’s representation in media was opened up for discussion through selected news articles and columns.
