Within December 3-9, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against the Syrians, Christians, Greeks and Jews as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Bizim Yaka, December 6, 2018

Ebru M. Minareci, in her column titled “Syrians”, labels Syrians as a threat against society as we see in the following remarks: “It is claimed that influenza that recently became persistent is contracted from Syrians”, “Syrians involved in various robbery and battery incidents alarm the people” and “The claims that Syrians are appointed to public offices without exams to which even Turkish citizens cannot easily reach, have the opportunity to open admission to universities, and enjoy vacation destinations raise some questions when our soldiers are martyred in Syria.” Thus, the columnist reinforces the existing negative opinions about Syrians and incites discrimination.

Bizim Anadolu Gazetesi, December 5, 2018

Nevzat Laleli, in his column titled “Western brutality in Cyprus”, writes: “Whenever Christian world occupies a Muslim country, there are massacres, rapes and destruction. These atrocities carried out by the Crusaders in the past continue today.” With these remarks, he represents Christians as a threat against Muslims and incites enmity against them.


3.

Star, December 5, 2018

The article published in Star with the headline “Sending to death”, and with the title of “Barbarous Greeks” inside reports the Greek police’s practices concerning refugees. The responsibility of the police forces is attributed to all Greeks with the description “Barbarous Greeks” used in the title for insulting Greeks. Thus, the existing prejudices against Greeks are reinforced.


4.

İstiklal, December 3, 2018

The article published in İstiklal with the title “Ungrateful Jews” insults Jews and cements negative opinions about them as we see in the following sentences: “Jews were sinking even deeper instead of being thankful for the divine grace that was constantly bestowed on them, and their ungratefulness had no limit though they were given various blessings thanks to the prayers of the Prophet Moses” and “They killed their uncle for money”.


1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
