Within May 21-27, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Jews, the British, Iraqis, Syrians and Greeks as well as the analyses written about them below.1
1.Tamer Üstüner, in his column titled “How to stop Israeli terrorism”, writes: “Threat of Zionism has been the nightmare of Palestinian people for 70 years. The British are the ones who made the Jews a thorn in Muslims’ flesh in Middle East” and “This terrorist Israeli state sheds Muslim blood; who will stop these heinous Jews?” With these remarks, he holds all Jewish and British people responsible for the ongoing violence in Israel and associates Jewish identity with violence and massacre. Thus, the newspaper reinforces negative opinions about and enmity against British and Jewish identities.

2.The article published in Ankara Haber Vaktim with the title “INTIMIDATION TO GREEKS” reinforces the perception of Greek identity as the enemy by featuring the statements of Turkish Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar with the title above.

3.In the article published in Samsun Gazetesi with the title “SYRIAN AND IRAQI MUGGERS CAUGHT” highlights the national identities of the perpetrators though it is not directly related to the incident. The article associates Syrian and Iraqi identities with crime and reinforces negative opinions about these identities.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
