Within April 23-29, 2018, four articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Jews, Armenians and Syrians as well as the analyses written about them below.1

Diriliş Postası, April 26, 2018

The article published in Diriliş Postası with the title “Armenians burned 587 Muslims in the mosque and in the mansion” associates Armenian identity with violence and atrocity. In this way, the article reinforces prejudices against Armenians and incites enmity between peoples.

Adapazarı Akşam Haberleri, April 25, 2018

Sedat Balta, in his column titled “SYRIANS BECAME A BURDEN”, associates Syrian identity with crime by mentioning the articles which can be seen in media frequently according to him: “Here are some incidents that took place within the last 24 hours; “Lynching attempt to Syrians who spread terror with a knife in Akyazı”, the police saved the Syrian who stabbed the young man he argued. In Atatürk Boulevard, Adapazarı, two Syrian groups fought. In Kızılcıkorman region of Akyazı, an Afghani worker was crushed to death by stuff falling from the forklift. These are some stories that we see in local media every day…” He also makes a comparison between Syrian refugees and Turkish citizens as we see in the following remarks: “While our young are martyred in Syria, young Syrian people are happily wandering around in our streets” and “While we cannot support our own poor people, billions are pouring out from the state’s treasury because the wrong refugee policy.” In this way, he reinforces existing negative perception of Syrians.

Yeni Akit, April 25, 2018

The article published in Yeni Akit with the title “Armenian psychopath shed blood in Canada” covers the attack in Toronto, Canada by highlighting the national identity of the perpetrator. In this way, the newspaper associates Armenian identity with violence and reinforces negative opinions about that identity.

Yeni Konya, April 24, 2018

The article published in Yeni Konya with the title “Inhuman statement by the Jew” covers an MP’s statement by highlighting their religious identity. In this way, the newspaper negative opinions about Jews.

 

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
