Within April 9-15, 2018, three articles that generate hate speech were selected. You can find these articles that contain hate speech against Greeks, Christians, Jews, Armenians and atheists as well as the analyses written about them below.1
1.The article published in Güneş with the title “GREEKS CANNOT STOP LYING” covers the Greek media’s incorrect stories on the jet crashed on the Aegean by generating negative opinions about Greek identity. In this way, the newspaper reinforces the existing prejudices against Greek identity and regenerates the perception of enmity.

2.The reader letter titled “What is terrorist America doing in Afrin, Manbij, and Middle East?”, which is published in Yeni Akit, associates Jews, Armenians, Americans and atheists with terror and conspiracy as we see in the following remarks: “In the Torah, which was changed, distorted by cursed rabbis of cursed Jews, there is the lie of promised lands. These lands are the eastern cities of my country. Cursed terrorist Israel and terrorist America are behind the terrorism in the east. And godless, faithless, atheist Armenian terrorists are their tools” and “Heathen terrorist Americans / Raise and support terrorists / and their goal is to occupy / the land gained with the martyrs’ blood”. Thus, negative perceptions of Jews, Armenians, American and atheists are reinforced and enmity is escalated.

3.In the article published in Yeni Söz with the title “’Insanity’ cover for Christian massacres”, the statements of the speakers who attended a conference in Istanbul are used in the title without quotation marks; Christian identity is associated with violence and massacre. Furthermore, with the subheadings “Christians generate fear over Muslims” and “They call ‘Muslim terrorists’”, prejudices against Christians are reinforced and the perception of enmity between Muslims and Christians is created.

1. Within the scope of the media monitoring work focusing on hate speech, all national newspapers and around 500 local newspapers are monitored based on pre-determined keywords (e.g. Traitor, apostate, refugee, Christian, Jewish, separatist, etc.) via the media monitoring center. While the main focus has been hate speech on the basis of national, ethnic and religious identities; sexist and homophobic discourses are also examined as part of the monitoring work.
